Gov. Baldacci and Environment Maine's Jennifer Anderson

It’s been a great few months here at Environment Maine as your new advocate. I’ve really enjoyed getting out into the community, working with coalition partners, meeting legislative leaders and talking with many of our members who are concerned about protecting Maine’s environment. Below are just a few of our most recent highlights:

Gov. John Baldacci visited our citizen outreach staff and shared how he started his life of public service when he was around their ages.

Flatbread Co. in Portland graciously hosted Environment Maine for a “benefit night” where we received a percentage of the proceeds of all sales, and the turnout was excellent. Environment Maine was also a co-sponsor of the free “Walkin’ Jim Stoltz Forever Wild 2006” concert in Portland where over 100 people turned out for this inspirational event to save our nation’s wilderness areas with moving songs, poetry and spectacular photography.

In addition, Environment Maine was chosen by Patagonia in Freeport to be the beneficiary of their “Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival” held at Frontier Café, Cinema and Gallery in Brunswick. There was standing room only for this exciting event which included six environmentally-inspired films.

Putting your contributions and our successful fundraising events to work, we launched our effort to get state legislative candidates to endorse our New Energy Future platform. We successfully secured support of 37 Maine legislative candidates that came from across the political spectrum including those in leadership positions, incumbents and first-time members. We look forward to working with these legislators in the new legislative session that begins in January to implement pieces of our New Energy Future platform.

Thanks to everyone who participated in these recent events and in other important ways by continuing to support our work here at Environment Maine. I look forward to meeting many more of you in the future.
