When I think of champions, I envision people who are good at what they do, care about what they do, stand up against tough opposition, and fight hard to win. The Red Sox come to mind for many of us, but I’m also thinking of Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins with this description.

Sens. Snowe and Collins are at the center of some of the biggest environmental issues at play in Washington, D.C. They really care about making Maine’s air cleaner and protecting the Arctic Wildlife Refuge, they stand up against power plant owners who shower our state with mercury, smog and soot, they pressure the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and leaders in their own party to take stronger action to limit pollution, and they have won great victories to stop bad environmental policies from being implemented.

On my most recent trip to Washington, D.C., I presented Sen. Snowe with a Public Interest Champion award for her work to protect the Arctic Wildlife Refuge from harmful oil and gas drilling. And, I presented Sen. Collins with a Public Interest Champion award for her outspoken efforts to challenge the EPA and to pass legislation to clean up power plants and improve Maine’s air quality.

I’m glad to have Sens. Snowe and Collins sticking up for Maine’s environment in Washington, D.C., and I look forward to continuing to work with them on protecting our air, water and open spaces.
