As we enter our fourth year, I want to tell you about some good news here at Environment Maine. We passed a law that sets a goal for Maine to produce 10 percent more clean, renewable energy by 2017. We also helped get the state to research what new programs could help reduce electricity-use and prioritize expanding energy efficiency programs to meet increased electricity demand. We’ll continue to closely follow these initiatives to make sure that Maine stays on the path to a clean energy future.

We hired our second fulltime advocate, Jennifer Puser Andersen. Most recently she was the Energy and Global Warming Program Outreach Coordinator for the Natural Resources Council of Maine. Prior to moving to Maine, she was the district representative for Assemblymember Virginia Strom-Martin and state Sen. Wesley Chesbro in Ukiah, a small town with a natural resources based-economy in northern California. With a Master’s degree that focused on urban planning and having served on the planning commission in Ukiah for seven years, she’ll add smart growth expertise to our staff, in addition to her political acumen and passion for environmental issues.

We had a great summer canvass, with over 20 staff going door-to-door and standing on main streets in towns and cities across the state talking with people about Moosehead Lake. We had conversations with over 30,000 Mainers, collected over 5,000 signatures to Gov. Baldacci and LURC to protect Moosehead Lake, signed up 1,500 new members of Environment Maine and helped organize a large citizens’ hearing in Portland in opposition to the Plum Creek development.
